Many Women Fail to Recognize and Seek Treatment for Heart Attacks

Sharp pain, tightness in the chest, shortness of breath: These may be the stereotypical signs of a heart attack, but for women, they can be the wrong signs to look for. According to research from the Yale School of Medicine, many women under the age of 55 don't recognize the more common heart-attack symptoms for their demographic -- often mistaken for other, less serious conditions -- and consequently don't get the prompt treatment they need. "We found that most failed to connect their symptoms with a heart condition, commonly misattributing them to fatigue, indigestion, stress, or overexertion," said Judith Lichtman, Ph.D., lead author of the study and associate professor of epidemiology and public health at Yale. The study was presented at the American Heart Association's 9th Scientific Forum on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research (QCOR) in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke.

Tips for Trainers

Training Students during Summer Vacation

Summer is just about here, and school is letting out for millions of students. This is the perfect time to teach middle and high school students CPR and basic first aid! Consider offering a course during the day at a community center or library just for students on summer break. Some of the older students may even be working in positions such as camp counselors or lifeguards where these skills are required. You might also want to contact camps or other day programs directly to see about holding a course for their employees or campers.

Q: What is "blended learning"?

A: Blended learning is a unique alternative to classroom-based training that provides an opportunity to expand training options to customers. Courses using a blended learning technique feature three key components:

  1. an online, cognitive portion that students can complete on their own time
  2. hands-on skills practice
  3. a hands-on session or skills test to be conducted by an authorized American Heart Association instructor.

Q: I organize the BLS for Healthcare Providers and ACLS training at my hospital. Are there any online programs that can be used for renewal of these courses?

A: American Heart Association offers online courses for both BLS for Healthcare Providers and ACLS. Both courses do require skills validation from an authorized American Heart Association instructor.
