Improved Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Survival Rates Linked to Increases in Emergency Medical Crew Witnessed Cases and Bystander CPR

Results of a 14-year study that looked at changes in survival rates among patients who were given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) have been released. The study -- conducted by researchers from the Department of Cardiology and Section of Prehospital Care, Karolinska Institute, South Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, and the Department of Cardiology, University of Göteborg, Sahlgrenska Hospital, Göteborg, Sweden -- involved 38,646 patients who were reported to the Swedish Cardiac Arrest Register between 1992 and 2005. Results showed that both the proportion of patients who were admitted alive to a hospital and the proportion of patients who were alive after one month increased during the 14-year period. Increased survival rates were linked to an increase in emergency medical crew witnessed cases and, to a lesser degree, an increase in bystander CPR.

Tips for Trainers

Train family members of cardiac rehab patients!

Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program to help heart patients recover quickly and improve their overall physical, mental, and social functioning. The goal is to stabilize, slow, or even reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease, another cardiac event, or death.

Unfortunately, many cardiac rehab patients remain at a higher risk for cardiac arrest. That's why it's critical for family members to be prepared to perform CPR in the event of a cardiac emergency in the home. Why not pair up with your local hospital or cardiac rehabilitation center to provide this lifesaving training to the families of their patients?

Help family members learn essential CPR skills in just half an hour!

Adult/Child CPR Anytime™ Personal Learning Program (w/ light skin EM80-1066 or w/ dark skin EM80-1421; $29.95 each) Adult/Child CPR Anytime™ Personal Learning Program (w/ light skin EM80-1066 or w/ dark skin EM80-1421; $29.95 each) features a self-learning format that uses DVD-based "watch-and-do" teaching to increase adult CPR skills and practice. Employees, students, their families -- anyone -- can conveniently practice CPR in-house, learning essential adult CPR skills in as little as half an hour!

Funding Opportunities

Fall 2008 Grant
Channing Bete Company presents
The American Heart Association Community Training Grant Program

We'll help you boost CPR training -- and survival rates -- in your community!

Bystander CPR doubles survival rates. Recent data suggests that more emphasis should be placed on reducing the time from a collapse to the start of CPR. The American Heart Association's goal is to increase CPR training from the current 9 million people per year to 20 million people by the year 2010. As a distributor of American Heart Association CPR/ECC materials, Channing Bete Company is also committed to reaching this goal.

Applicants are asked to submit a proposal outlining a creative project for increasing the number of laypeople taught by their Training Center. Proposals should incorporate a detailed project description outlining what products will be used, in what fashion, the groups to be trained, and the estimated number of trainees.

Up to four successful applicants will each be awarded up to $2,500 in grant money toward the purchase of American Heart Association materials and other ancillary products (manikins, AED trainers, etc.) required for community training from Channing Bete Company.

Ask Ann -- one of our in-house experts!

Q: I need to be credentialed for my job, but I can't attend a group training session. Can I use the Heartsaver® AED Anytime™ program, and if so, how does it work?

A: The Heartsaver® AED Anytime™ program is perfect for you. It's flexible, it's thorough, and it will provide you with the course card you need once you complete these three steps:

  1. Using the Heartsaver® CPR Anytime™ DVD, you learn and practice CPR skills either at your workplace or at home.
  2. Using your computer, you go through each lesson on the Heartsaver® AED Anytime™ Skills Practice CD. When you're finished, you print out a certificate indicating that you have successfully completed the AED segment of the course.
  3. You meet with an American Heart Association BLS or Heartsaver instructor who will administer a CPR skills test and -- provided you pass -- award you an American Heart Association Heartsaver AED Course Completion Card.

Before you begin training with this program, we suggest you double-check with your employer that this independent learning method is acceptable at your company.

Q. Where can I order the CPR exams that I use in my classes?

A. Exams are available through your American Heart Association Service Center (not through American Heart Association distributors). Call 1-888-CPR-LINE.

Send your questions for Ann to aha@channing-bete.com.
