Child Abuse and Gene Variant Combine to Increase PTSD Risk in Adults

Researchers have discovered a link between the gene FKBP5, child abuse, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adulthood. Their study involved 900 primarily African American people 18 to 81 years old, from poor, urban neighborhoods, many of whom had experienced abuse in childhood as well as other kinds of trauma as adults. Approximately 30 percent of participants also had variations in the gene FKBP5. The study showed that those who were victims of child abuse and had the FKBP5 gene variants were twice as likely to suffer from PTSD as participants who had just one of the risk factors. While the results are still early and further research is needed, the study is helpful in enabling mental health professionals to better identify individuals at risk for PTSD and develop appropriate treatment plans.
