K-12 EDUCATION

The Braitmayer Foundation

Application Deadlines:
For grants up to $35,000: June 1 each year
For grants up to $10,000: June 1 and November 15 each year

Description: The foundation is interested in K-12 education throughout the United States. Of particular interest are:

curricular and school reform initiatives
preparation of and professional development opportunities for teachers, particularly those that encourage people of high ability and diverse background to enter and remain in K-12 teaching.

Guidelines: The foundation is pleased to have its grants used as seed money and challenge grants, or to match other grants to the recipient organization. The foundation does not normally make grants to individuals, multiyear grants, grants for endowment purposes or building programs, or grants to child-care or pre-kindergarten programs.

Funding Amount: Presently, the foundation has two grant categories: grants up to $10,000 and grants up to $35,000.

Surdna Foundation

Application Deadline: There are no formal deadlines to apply for funding. The Surdna Foundation accepts applications on an ongoing basis. However, grants are approved three times per year: in February, May, and September. Applicants should make their requests three to four months ahead of time for staff review.

Description: The Surdna Foundation makes grants to nonprofit organizations in the areas of environment, community revitalization, effective citizenry, the arts, and the nonprofit sector.

Who May Apply: Nonprofit organizations must generally have a valid tax exemption status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and be classified as a public charity and not as a "private foundation" under Section 509(a). The foundation does not generally make grants to government and public agencies, or to individuals.

Home Depot Foundation -- Affordable Housing Built Responsibly

Application Deadlines: Letter of inquiry: July 1, 2008; full proposal: September 15, 2008

Description: The Home Depot Foundation makes grants to 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charities in the United States and to charitable organizations in Canada. Support is given to programs and projects that align with the foundation's mission and grant criteria. Preference is given to proposals that include community engagement; result in the production, preservation, or financing of housing units for low- to moderate-income families; and address as many of the following considerations as possible:

resource efficiency in design, construction, and operations
minimization of the depletion of natural resources, including timber and water
inclusion of landscaping features, such as trees and shrubs, that minimize demand for water and synthetic chemicals and reduce heat island effect
utilization of innovative and durable materials to reduce cost
the use of more environmentally friendly building materials
site planning with minimal environmental impact
energy-efficiency and renewable energy use
indoor air-quality improvement, including moisture control and proper ventilation
smart site planning and land use.

Who May Apply: The Home Depot Foundation will only fund nonprofit organizations that are designated as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code in the United States or that have a notification of registration and confirmation of registration from the Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency Charities Division in Canada.

The Commonwealth Fund

Application Deadline: The Commonwealth Fund requests letters of inquiry to initiate the grant application process. Letters of inquiry are accepted on a rolling basis; there are no deadlines.

Description: The Commonwealth Fund's mission is to promote a high-performing health-care system that achieves better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency -- particularly for society's most vulnerable members, including low-income people, uninsured people, minority Americans, young children, and elderly adults. The fund carries out this mandate by supporting independent research on health-care issues and making grants to improve health-care practice and policy. An international program in health policy is designed to stimulate innovative policies and practices in the United States and other industrialized countries.

Who May Apply: The fund makes grants only to tax-exempt organizations and public agencies.

ALCOHOL ON CAMPUS

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) -- UMADD Mini-Grants

Application Deadline: Ongoing

Description: MADD is offering mini-grants to qualifying groups to help implement evidence-based prevention programs that focus on college-related drinking problems on campuses and/or in the surrounding communities. Priority for funding will be given to applications that:

incorporate the UMADD projects recommended on the Web site
seek to change environmental factors (laws, policies, enforcement) or populations (student body, anyone under 21) rather than individual behavior (motivational speaker, crashed-car exhibit, basic alcohol education)
include partnership with multiple groups, both on campus and in the community
support or enhance law-enforcement efforts.

Funding Amount: Mini-grants:

have a maximum of $500
will be reimbursed upon project completion (with original receipts)
require a completed project evaluation.

Who May Apply: Mini-grants are available to:

UMADD student-groups
new groups that have applied to become UMADD groups
active student groups
approved students
campus or community law enforcement working on college-related initiatives
campus/community partnerships working on college-related initiatives
faculty, including alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) or other campus prevention coordinators.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
