Wachovia Foundation -- The Wachovia Teachers and Teaching Initiative

Application Deadline: Applications are accepted by invitation only. If an organization meets the stated criteria and wishes to be invited to apply, the applicant should contact the foundation via e-mail with more information about why the organization should be invited to submit a proposal for funding.

Description: The Wachovia Foundation is interested in working with nonprofit organizations that are implementing and/or developing tailored approaches to improving education in their communities. Priority will be given to programs that increase student achievement in grades pre-K through 12 by:

• reaching and specifically addressing the needs of underserved, under-resourced school districts and communities
• offering program interventions for educator learning that align with student curriculum standards and support/emphasize student achievement
• leveraging community resources by partnering with other providers to avoid duplication of services
• assessing the lasting impact of their efforts through data collection and evaluation.

Examples of such programs include, but are not limited to:

• programs that offer school-based professional development opportunities, including coaching, peer exchange, and grade-level curriculum planning with teachers
• programs that implement a mentoring program to support teachers' preparation and completion of certification
• programs that replicate a principal leadership institute modeled after a high-quality program that incorporates best practices.

Who May Apply: Eligible organizations must:

• have 501(c)(3) status
• have a mission to improve public education
• have core programs to support pre-K through 12 public education
  
• offer programs and/or services that address the systemic issues related to teachers and teaching, such as professional development, school support, recruitment, or retention
• provide programs and/or services in one or more of the following states: AL, CT, DE, FL, GA, MD, MS, NJ, NY, NC, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, or Washington, D.C.

Funding Amount: The average grant ranges from $100,000 to $250,000.

HOME VISITATION

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services -- Administration for Children and Families -- Evidence-Based Home Visitation Programs to Prevent Child Maltreatment Grant

Application Deadline: July 21, 2008

Description: These funds will support the infrastructure needed for the widespread adoption, implementation, and sustaining of evidence-based home-visitation programs. Funds will be used for efforts to expand and enhance home visitation programs based on proven effective models. Funds will support:

• collaborative planning efforts to leverage other federal, state, and local investments of existing funding streams into evidence-based home visitation programs and practices
• a range of activities needed to build infrastructure systems that can fully adopt, implement, and sustain high-quality home-visitation programs that have strong fidelity to proven-effective models
• rigorous local evaluations that include process/implementation, outcome, and cost-analysis components.

Funding Amount: 1 to 21 awards of $100,000 to $500,000

Who May Apply:

• State governments
  
• County governments
• City or township governments
• Special district governments
• Public and state-controlled institutions of higher education
• Private institutions of higher education
• Native American tribal governments (federally recognized)
• Native American tribal organizations (other than federally recognized tribal governments)

• Nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
• Nonprofits that do not have 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education

Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation

Application Deadline: The Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation board meets three times each year to consider requests. Board meetings take place in winter (January or February), spring (April or May), and fall (October). The foundation would like to have all requests submitted for consideration no later than one month prior to each board meeting, and deadlines are strictly enforced. Applicants are generally notified in writing within three to four weeks after the board meeting.

Description: The mission of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation is to give back to and strengthen the thousands of communities where Enterprise's employees and customers work and live through charitable support. The foundation provides charitable support to worthwhile nonprofit initiatives that are actively supported by the company's employees, their spouses, and loyal Enterprise customers in the thousands of local communities where Enterprise operates its businesses. It also provides more sizable special grants to nonprofit groups or causes of significant strategic or social importance to the company and its employees.

Funding Amount: The average grant amount is $2,500 to $5,000.

Who May Apply: The foundation provides grants only to qualified tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations in the United States, and requires that a copy of the 501(c)(3) letter be attached to the proposal.

YOUTH GARDENING

National Gardening Association and Home Depot -- 2009 Youth Garden Grants Program

Application Deadline: November 1, 2008

Description: The National Gardening Association (NGA) awards Youth Garden Grants to schools and community organizations with child-centered garden programs. In evaluating grant applications, priority will be given to programs that emphasize one or more of these elements:

• educational focus or curricular/program integration
• nutrition or plant-to-food connections
• environmental awareness/education
• entrepreneurship
• social aspects of gardening, such as leadership development, team building, community support, and service learning.

Funding Amount: Gift cards of $1,000, $500, or $250 to Home Depot, and educational materials from NGA will be awarded.

Who May Apply: Schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs, treatment facilities, and intergenerational groups in the United States are eligible to apply. Applicants must plan to garden with at least fifteen children between the ages of 3 and 18. Previous Youth Garden Grant winners who wish to reapply may do so but must wait a year.
