Description: The WHO Foundation: Women Helping Others(R) nationally supports grass-roots charities serving the overlooked needs of women and children. Grants are provided to organizations serving women and/or children in the United States and Puerto Rico. Specific projects and programs addressing health, education, and social-service needs are the foundation's priority.

The Comer Foundation -- Needle Exchange Program

Application Deadlines: March 1, July 1, and November 1 annually

Description: The Comer Foundation provides support to not-for-profit organizations focused on needle exchange and other harm-reduction strategies within the drug-using community, and seeks to facilitate the process between organizations and communities committed to creating and maintaining health.

Who May Apply: The Comer Foundation makes grants to organizations that are exempt from federal tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code and that are not classified as private foundations under section 509(a) of the code.

Funding Amount: Average single-year grants range from $5,000 to $30,000.

GRIEVING CHILDREN, TEENS, AND FAMILIES

A Little HOPE -- The National Foundation for Grieving Children, Teens, and Families

Application Deadline: August 31, 2008

Description: A Little HOPE is a not-for-profit public charity, recognized by the IRS under 501(c)(3), that grants funds to organizations that provide bereavement support services and grief counseling to children and teens who have experienced the loss of a parent or loved one, regardless of the circumstances of the death. A Little HOPE welcomes inquiries from organizations by e-mail or fax only (no phone calls). Please send a letter of inquiry (only) that includes the organization's Web site address and the names of both the executive director and the program director.

FAMILY LITERACY

The Barbara Bush Foundation For Family Literacy -- National Grant Program

Application Deadline: September 5, 2008

Description: This grant program seeks to develop or expand projects that support the development of literacy skills for adult primary caregivers and their children. Family literacy programs funded through this opportunity must include all of the following components:

  1. reading instruction for parents or primary caregivers
  2. literacy or pre-literacy instruction for children
  3. intergenerational activities where parents/primary caregivers and children come together to learn and read.

Programs can also include additional components such as parent support groups, parent involvement, home visits, and job training.

Funding Amount: Up to $65,000 each

Who May Apply: Organizations with nonprofit or public status
